VCU Recycling and Landfill Signage | Digital Process Print on Adhesive Vinyl | 12in x 6in

Picture
Picture
Immediately after starting at VCU Sustainability, I identified an opportunity for improvement within the current recycling and landfill signage at VCU. I redesigned comprehensive signage encouraging students, faculty, and staff understand how to separate their waste properly, including a breakdown of one of the more common mis-sorted items: the to-go coffee cup. Relying heavily on text and color coordination, the new signs employ a clear hierarchy of information.

Limited Edition Playing Cards | Letterpress Print | 2.5in x 3.5in

To create these cards, I spent 100 hours working in the letterpress studio setting type, designing and creating photopolymer plates, mixing ink, printing, cutting, and corner rounding. I made 30 decks of unique cards, each with their own back color.

How to Recycle | Digital Process Print, Vinyl Cut | 2in x 2in x .75in

This is a simple reusable canister with a long strip of vinyl inside that informs the reader where to find information on what can be recycled. The owner can use this container to hold whatever they may need to carry even though there is an entire publication within.

Saving Green & Going Green | Digital Process Print | 5in x 8in

This publication was distributed by the VCU Office of Sustainability to VCU students for free. The book is full of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free recipes, each with a price estimate. Given complete creative direction, I established a typographic hierarchy and a grid system to create visual consistency while allowing for variety in content.

Bottle Cap Magnets | Digital Print | 1in x 1in

Many bottle caps have a small piece of plastic on the inside, either to act as a gasket to seal the air, or to absorb the oxygen within the bottle. This combination of metal and plastic makes bottle caps non-recyclable. These magnets act as a reminder, and as an idea of a way to reuse instead of generating waste.

Flossers, Floss Picks, and Flossups | Digital Process Print | 5in x 5in

Consisting of 5 eight-page signatures, this book is a typographic study of the vernacular used on flosser packaging. I created a 3D typeface to use in one signature, I created small sculptures out of flossers, and documented over 50 flossers littered on the ground. The book is bound with minty fresh dental floss.

Coffee Sleeve | Letterpress Print | 4.5in x 2.5in

Single-Stream is a self-run publishing imprint focused on environmental sustainability. This letterpressed coffee sleeve reminds hot drink drinkers that the cup, which is often lined with a thin layer of polyethylene, is not recyclable.

A Plastic Guide | Digital Process Print | 3in x 10in

This is a guide to plastics, breaking down each type of plastic (1-7). It is printed on plastic number 3 (PVC), and is meant to be as confusing as it is helpful, just as the process of recycling can be.

Award-Winning Wrapping Paper | Digital Offset Print | 24in x 36in

Many people have someone in their family who only ever wants tools for holiday gifts. This wrapping paper is perfect for those gifts and those people. Produced by Worth Higgins for a wrapping paper design competition, this glossy paper is printed with Pantone 877 silver ink and a gloss spot-varnish on the metallic elements.

01000100 01000001 01000100 | Digital Process Print | 8in x 8in

After a 30 minute interview with my father, who worked for the Department of Defense for 30 years, I converted the transcript to binary, only leaving the essential information readable. The text is crunched and compact, in reference to the raw amount of information I received in 30 short minutes, and to the massive amount of data my father would have come across during his career.

Glyphs | Digital Process Print | A0

Picture
These glyphs are the product of abstraction of everyday objects. Forms were boiled down from things like a toothbrush, a spray can, a roll of tape, and other random objects.

VCU Havoc Mug | Digital Process Print

VCU Business Services hosted a campus-wide design competition to create a VCU tumbler. After studying the VCU style guide online, I submitted this design and won the competition.
